It is February already. My, how the time flies! If you are like me, you are really starting to chomp at the bit to get started on this year's garden projects. Spring is so close yet so far. However, there are plenty of things to do now to ensure success this spring and summer.
Grass Care in February
Winter watering is still essential. Make sure to water 1-2 times this month when temperatures are above 40 degrees F and the ground isn't frozen. Avoid heavy traffic on frozen or dormant grass to prevent damage.
Now is the time to lightly clean up debris. This allows air and light to reach the lawn. Additionally, focus on tool maintenance. Sharpen the mower blades, change the oil, and tune up your equipment before spring is in full swing. It's always good to be ahead of the game!
Gardening Tasks This Month
If you haven't already, February is a great time to prune and shape trees and shrubs. Remove any unwanted or dead branches. However, be cautious not to prune early-blooming shrubs like lilacs, as they will already be setting buds.
Late February is perfect for planting cold-hardy pansies if the weather is mild. Yes, add some color to your landscape! Now is also the time to start planning your garden layout. Make sure to rotate your crops as necessary to avoid pest and disease infestations.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Consider starting seeds indoors or in your greenhouse, especially for long-growing peppers and cold-hardy brassicas like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and kale. This will give you a head start on your garden and ensure a bountiful harvest later in the season.
Caution with Ice Melt Products
Always use caution if you use ice melt products. These can cause damage to your turf and soil, reducing growth in the spring. It's better to be safe than sorry!
